Grandview Medical Center First in Birmingham to Acquire Latest Surgical Robot Technology

BIRMINGHAM, AL (May 7, 2025) – Grandview Medical Center is the first hospital in Birmingham, and among the first in the state, to acquire two new surgical robots equipped with modern technological advancements. The addition of the robots expands Grandview’s robotic fleet to 12.
The new surgical system is designed to enhance precision, control and visualization which often allows surgeons to perform complex procedures through smaller incisions, potentially leading to shorter hospital stays, faster recovery times and reduced risk of complications.
“Robotic surgery is minimally invasive and can offer a better patient experience with certain procedures compared to traditional open surgeries or minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures,” said Dr. Barton Wood, general/bariatric surgeon at Grandview Medical Center and director of the hospital’s robotic program. “This new technology enhances dexterity, enabling surgeons to feel the tension of the tissue during each procedure. Continued advancements in this technology are an advantage for us as surgeons and for our patients."
In addition to general surgery, robotic-assisted technology can be used for urology, oncology, cardiovascular, bariatric, thoracic, gynecology and colorectal procedures.
“We are excited to be the first to bring this technology to those we serve in central Alabama,” said Daniel McKinney, chief executive officer of Grandview Medical Center. “Our robotic program at Grandview is strong and that is a credit to the 54 surgeons who are using some form of robotics to perform surgical cases. This new acquisition not only benefits our patients but our surgeons as well. As we celebrate our 10th anniversary here at Grandview, we are committed to moving healthcare forward.”
