Grandview Cancer Center
In June 2018, Grandview Cancer Center opened its doors. The center is designed to help patients more easily access a breadth of cancer care treatment and resources in one convenient location.
Located on the Grandview Medical Center campus, the free-standing, two-story Grandview Cancer Center includes a linear accelerator, a pharmacy, chemotherapy infusion bays and a large-bore PET/CT scanner for diagnostic studies and simulations. Radiation oncology is located on the first floor of the center and hematology/oncology services on the second floor. Surface parking is available for the convenience of patients.
In addition to the advanced medical technologies, the approach of the facility will include personalized treatment. This will be based on the latest molecular diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in cancer care. Team-based approaches to care that include interdisciplinary clinics and research will also be incorporated.
Diagnosis & Treatment
At Grandview Medical Center, we diagnose and treat several forms of cancer, including the most common conditions, such as lung, breast, colorectal, head/neck and brain cancers. With our dedicated team of professionals and sophisticated technology, we are committed to providing personalized care.

Grandview Cancer Center houses a linear accelerator. The system is fully integrated for image-guided radiotherapy and radiosurgery. Using this linear accelerator allows for treating cancer anywhere in the body where radiation treatment is indicated, including lung, breast, colorectal, head and neck and brain cancers. Motion management technology, integrated 3D imaging and high dose rates are a few tools utilized for radiation therapy. From fast, precise imaging to accurate radiation dose delivery, this particular technology helps the physician navigate the complexities of cancer care.
Grandview Cancer Center has also installed a large-bore PET/CT scanner. This technology is an expansion of the system utilized in PET/ CT and radiation therapy planning. The high resolution PET/CT scan, with advanced motion management, enables visualization of small structures and a faster scan time for the patients. The large bore size accommodates immobilization devices and larger patients without compromising image quality.
Cancer Registry
The cancer registry is a system designed for the collection, management and analysis of data about people diagnosed with cancer. The goal is to assist the medical profession in promoting quality care for patients with specific types of cancer. The primary purpose of the cancer registry is to provide lifetime follow-up on all registry patients. In all cases, confidentiality is maintained and names are never used.
Cancer Care Team
The medical team at Grandview Cancer Center consists of a full-time radiation oncologist, a physicist, a dosimetrist, radiation therapists and partnerships with the area’s medical oncologists, internal medicine physicians, radiologists, gynecologists, pathologists, general surgeons and family physicians. Our caring nursing staff is on-call 24 hours a day for a continuum of care for patients. Because each cancer patient presents a unique and specific set of needs, treatment plans for the patients are customized to give every patient specialized and individualized care.
Cancer Conferences
Cancer doesn’t stop - neither do our specialists. Weekly cancer conferences help our physicians and staff connect and discuss all parts of cancer care, including diagnosis, treatment options and follow-ups. These conferences bring together professionals from each part of our hospital, from internal medicine and nursing to radiation oncology, surgery and other specialists. It is an opportunity for our experts to explore new ideas, discover new research and put their heads together to improve treatment for our patients.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is the use of drugs to treat cancerous cells by interfering with the cell’s ability to grow or reproduce. It is one of the most common treatments for cancer. Different drugs work in different ways to impact cell growth. Chemotherapy may be used as a stand-alone treatment or in combination with other treatments, such as radiation or surgery, to treat the disease. Patients can receive chemotherapy on an inpatient and outpatient basis at Grandview Medical Center.
Radiation Therapy
Commonly used to treat cancerous or other abnormal growths, radiation therapy exposes diseased cells to radiation to destroy them. In some cases, tumors are treated with radiation alone. Radiation therapy can precede or follow surgery or be used in conjunction with chemotherapy to rid the body of remaining tumor cells. Regardless of the type, radiation therapy at Grandview Medical Center is performed by an experienced staff of radiation oncologists, radiation therapists, dosimetrists and nurses dedicated to making treatment as successful as possible.
Grandview Medical Center performs more than 1500 MRI Prostate scans*
Grandview Medical Center recently marked an important milestone in our fight against prostate cancer. The hospital’s Imaging department completed its 1,500th magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) prostate scan designed to detect clinically significant prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men.
Radiologists with Birmingham Radiological Group and urologists from Urology Centers of Alabama work together in using MRI to determine which patients with elevated prostate-specific antigen (PSA) are likely to have clinically significant prostate cancer. Likewise, they can also determine which patients are unlikely to have significant disease and can avoid prostate biopsies.
Utilizing three dimensional computer processing, radiologists are using MRI prostate scans to target lesions and direct urologists to prostate lesions that have a high likelihood of being aggressive prostate cancers.
While PSA screening is important, it is not exact. Data shows that adding MRI prostate scans to the evaluation of patients with elevated PSA can assist in detecting more clinically significant prostate cancer while decreasing the number of negative biopsies.
