Esophagogastoduodenoscopy or Upper Endoscopy (EGD)
EGD involves advancing a camera device into the esophagus, stomach and upper part of the small intestine known as the duodenum. It helps to diagnose celiac disease, esophagitis, acid reflux, hiatal hernia and cancers in these organs. It is also used to place percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tubes for feeding.
Colonoscopy
Colonoscopy involves advancing a camera device into the colon to look at the inner lining of the large intestine. It is used to diagnose ulcers, polyps and tumors.
ERCP
Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a combined endoscopic and radiologic procedure performed to diagnose and treat diseases in the bile and pancreatic ducts. It involves:
- Stone removal
- Treating infection of the bile duct (known as cholangitis)
- Treating leakage from these ducts following surgery or trauma
- Dilation of narrowing of the ducts
- Diagnosing cancers of the bile duct and pancreas
- Inserting stents to relieve blockage of the ducts
Complex ERCP
- Cholangioscopy
- This procedure involves insertion of a small scope with camera directly into the pancreatic or bile duct to directly visualize diseases in these ducts, and perform direct biopsies or breaking stones
- EDGE - procedure accessing ampulla, without having major surgery, after gastric bypass; EUS directed transgastric ERCP
Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)
EUS is an endoscopic procedure that utilizes a camera device (endoscope) coupled with high frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to examine the GI tract and surrounding organs.
EUS is used to:
- Screen for, diagnose and stage cancers within the GI tract, pancreas, gallbladder and liver
- Evaluate masses in the lining of the GI tract
- Biopsy lymph nodes and other masses surrounding the GI tract
- Drain fluid and infected collections in the pancreas and other organs
- Accessing excluded organs like the stomach in patients with gastric bypass
- Evaluate for common bile duct
- Assist with performance of complex ERCP

Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR)
This procedure used to remove polyps and other lesions from different parts of the digestive tract such as the esophagus, stomach, small intestine or colon.
Double Balloon Enteroscopy (DBE)
Using a longer scope with a special over-tube and balloon, this procedure is performed to access the entire length of small intestine to locate bleeding areas, tumors, narrowings and for other indications.
Barrett's Esophagus Ablation
Barrett's esophagus is a precancerous condition that develops due to chronic acid reflux. Surgeons perform radiofrequency ablation and cryotherapy to ablate Barrett's esophagus. These procedures allow the esophagus to heal, and prevent the development of esophageal cancer.
Endoscopic Stenting
This procedure is done to place various types of stents in the esophagus, stomach, small intestine and colon. Stents are hollow devices that are placed to relieve obstruction (from cancer or benign diseases), and close leaks and perforations (holes that can develop in the GI tract).
Other Diagnostic Endoscopic Procedures
- Pill cam (capsule endoscopy used to visualize the entire length of the small intestine to evaluate for bleeding sources, tumors and diagnosing Crohn's disease)
- Esophageal high-resolution manometry measures the pressure and functionality of the esophagus. This test is used to diagnose achalasia (which affects the ability of the body to move food into the stomach), and esophageal spasms (which also affect how food is carried to the stomach).
- Ph probe placement for monitoring (BRAVO)
- HET (for hemorrhoids)
